Important Things To Remember Before Your First Zip Line Adventure

Zip lining has become a very popular activity for residents and visitors throughout Durango, and for good reason. This fun and exciting activity is the perfect answer for adventure enthusiasts who want to experience the thrill of rushing through the air without having to parachute out of a plane or bounce back on a shock cord. As with any recreational activity, it’s important to know the proper safety precautions before you go zipping through the Colorado mountains. In this blog, we’ll look at some important things to remember before your set foot on your very first zip line course.

Before you leave your home or hotel to partake in a zip line tour, make sure that you’re wearing the right attire for flying through the air. From sweatpants to t-shirts, you’ll want to make sure the clothes you wear are comfortable yet secure. If you plan on visiting Durango in the summer, be sure to wear lighter, loose-fitting clothes that can handle the intense Colorado sun. You’ll likely be required to wear a safety harness around your waist and legs. If you plan on wearing shorts, keep in mind that the harness and straps can brush up against your skin and cause irritation. Some people find that wearing long pants can make the harness a bit more comfortable.

For women, try to avoid wearing skirts or dresses to your zip line adventure. These clothing items can be seen as a safety hazard, since they often feature loose swinging materials that can get caught in the harness and zip line wire. Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes to ensure your little piggies are protected at all times. Loose jewelry should also be removed, and if you have long hair, we always recommend pulling it back into a ponytail or bun.

Carefully Listen To Your Zipline Guide

When you embark on a zipline tour, you will likely have an experience guide instructing you throughout the course of the day. The guide’s job is to make sure everyone has a safe and fun experience, and if you’re too busy talking during the initial zip line instructions, you may miss out on some critical safety information.

At Durango Rivertrippers & Adventure Tours, our qualified zip line instructors take pride in providing our customers with a safe and enjoyable zip line experience. We regularly inspect all of our lines to ensure that the zip line course is safe at all times. We’ll also equip you with a safety harness and helmet before we head out on our fun zip line tour.

Learn The Basics of Braking

Several zip line courses have hand brakes that allow each participant to control his or her ability to slow down before reaching the next platform. These brakes are a great addition to zip line courses because they give the participant more control, not to mention it creates a more comfortable dismount.

Watch Your Step On The Course

Once your zip line instructor has spoken to your group about proper safety precautions while on the course, it’s time to enjoy flying through the air! Once you step foot on the zip line course, it’s important to make sure that you are strapped into a safety line at all times, not just when you are zipping through space. Many accidents occur when people step off of a platform, so it’s crucial to ensure you are safely attached to a line that will catch you if you fall.

Know Your Limits

As you may already know, many zip lines have weight limits. Before you sign up for a zip line excursion, be sure to reach out to the company to inquire about their weight limits. If you’re pregnant or you have a heart condition, you may want to reconsider your zip line adventure as well.
